During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had the unique opportunity to work as an events and registration assistant for the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This role allowed me to contribute to the global effort in restoring international travel, specifically through the High-Level Correspondence Ministerial Conference on COVID-19. This was my first experience with the United Nations, and it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding journey.

Adapting to New Challenges

Working with ICAO during such an unprecedented time was both challenging and exhilarating. One of the key aspects of my role was to provide support to event organizers and meeting participants. This involved coordinating various logistics and ensuring smooth communication between all parties involved. Given the international scope of the organization, my schedule often included unconventional start times, including a few days that began as early as 2 AM to accommodate different time zones.

Facilitating Global Dialogue

The ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, tasked with managing the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. In this role, I was responsible for welcoming and guiding participants during both hybrid and face-to-face meetings. My duties included acting as a facilitator to direct the traffic during on-site registration and ensuring that all attendees had a seamless experience.

One of the highlights of my time at ICAO was attending and coordinating high-profile conferences. The High-Level Ministerial Conference on COVID-19, in particular, was a pivotal event aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the aviation industry and finding ways to safely restore international travel. Being part of such a significant event was a testament to the critical work being done by ICAO and the United Nations to navigate the complexities brought about by the pandemic.

Lessons Learned

Working with the United Nations ICAO provided me with invaluable insights and experiences. I learned the importance of flexibility and adaptability, especially when dealing with global events that require meticulous planning and coordination. The experience also underscored the significance of international collaboration in addressing global crises.

Furthermore, I had the chance to witness firsthand how international organizations like ICAO play a crucial role in shaping policies and fostering cooperation among nations. The dedication and resilience of everyone involved were truly inspiring, and it was a privilege to contribute to such meaningful work.

Final Thoughts

My time with the United Nations ICAO during COVID-19 was a defining period in my career. It not only broadened my professional horizons but also deepened my understanding of the complexities of international civil aviation and global diplomacy. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an important mission and look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I gained to future endeavors.
